“A brilliant day - stories at the right level
for each age group. Pupils enjoyed joining in with the storytelling.”
Worsthorne Primary School, Nr Burnley
”Excellent value for money. We would recommend
you to other schools.”
Farington Moss St Paul's CE Primary, Leyland
Dominic's engaging style of telling draws children and young people into
the stories, which range from comic yarns to tales of mystery and suspense.
For younger years he combines the wonder and humour of folktales and legends
with infectious audience participation that involves the children in the telling.
For older pupils he performs longer pieces, often with more challenging emotional
depth. These include complex folktales from the Irish and Scottish Gaelic
traditions, legends of the supernatural, and Norse and Celtic myths.
He has been closely involved in the production of features on storytelling
for Scholastic's Literacy Time magazine, and also contributed to the production
of 'Telling Tales: Storytelling & Emotional Literacy' by Taffy Thomas
and Dr Steve Killick. Dominic's interaction with the curriculum draws not
only on his professional storytelling expertise but also on 8 years as a
primary school teacher.
The range of storytelling experiences Dominic provides for schools includes:
- Performances for different age-groups, based on his wide repertoire
of folk-tales, myths, and legends. Maximum of 4 performances in a day,
each of up to an hour.
- A combination of performances and workshops - either with a range
of age groups, or more intensive work with one or two classes.
- Multi-day projects. Storytelling projects can be provided of almost
infinite flexibility and length, incorporating topics from across the
curriculum: these can involve a number of consecutive days for an intensive
storytelling experience, or a day a week over several weeks with one
or two year groups. They can encompass storytelling skills, story-creation
and performance, often culminating in performances by each of the oldest
pupils to small audiences of younger pupils in the school, knitting together
the school community through story. They can equally lead into drama,
visual art and creative writing.
School Trips
Dominic can enrich the children’s experience of a school trip with storywalks,
and tales to suit the nature and location of the day. He can also provide
an evening of educational entertainment as part of residential trips.
Workshops
Dominic's range of storytelling workshops fit in with differing time-limitations
and age groups. They vary from tactile activities for younger children
to workshops that help older pupils master more complex telling, as well
as sessions facilitating children's own story-creation. All of these utilise
visual, oral and hands-on learning styles. They strongly support development
of Speaking & Listening skills and self-esteem.
“The children greatly enjoyed their sessions.
We will certainly be making good use of the storytelling techniques in our
literacy work.”
Higham St John's CE Primary School, Burnley
”The activities/themes were well matched to
the children's ages and abilities. I wish I'd had my camera on hand to catch
the children's concentration - they were absorbed.“
Slyne-with-Hest CE Primary School, Lancaster
"It was a great day. Both staff and pupils
thoroughly enjoyed the sessions...You managed to captivate all the children.”
Moulton School, Cheshire
